French Water Restrictions

Written by

In this region of France, we are used to hot and dry summers and often these lead to local restrictions for watering gardens and other green areas. A popular subject for conversations, the rules and measures are frequently exchanged between friends and neighbours, but the advice is not always accurate and current. To check out the daily position for the Poitou-Charentes region, check-out this useful link - water-restriction site. You just need to enter your departement and commune name to see the detailed list of what can and cannot be watered, and the restricted times of day.

French Gardening Dictons

Written by

At the start of the year, many French gardeners are already predicting the whole year's weather. This is based upon an old French saying or “Dicton”:

"Les douze premiers jours de janvier,
Indiquent le temps qu'il fera les douze mois de l'année."
(The first 12 days of January show what the weather will be like in the coming year.)

Les Saints de glace

Written by

There are three “Saints of Ice”: Saint Mamert (May 11), Saint Pancrace (May 12) and Saint Servais (May 13). According to popular tradition, they have the reputation of bringing cold and the frosty weather to an end. The belief is that once these three Saints have “had their day”, the gardener need not be afraid of further frosts.

Today, the majority of the calendars do not mention these saints. In 1960 the Roman Catholic church “replaced” the trio with Saints Estelle, Achille et Rolande.
